PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem such as inconvenience or difficulty, in which a pressure plate is opened or closed against operator's intention. SOLUTION: In the image processing device, having a document reading part which automatically opens or closes a pressure plate, the pressure plate is opened or closed automatically by a drive means, without manual opening or closing of the pressure plate so that anyone can readily use the apparatus. An operation panel 30 is provided with a pressure plate opening/closing button 38 so that a user can directly make a pressure plate undergo opening/closing operation, thereby opening/closing drive means is operated according to the operation of the button. This solves the problems of the prior technology, in which it takes longer time to set a document than is necessary, a pressure plate is closed before the setting of a document is finished, reading starts with a document set unsatisfactorily, or fingers, etc., are pinched by the pressure plates. In other words, the apparatus can be used, without such inconvenience or difficulty as uniformly controlling the opening/closing operation by the apparatus, in response to the detection signal of a sensor according to predetermined opening/closing time (program).
