PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic reproducing head utilizing a perpendicular recording method, of which reliability is improved by suppressing a noise and stabilizing a reproduced waveform, and to provide a magnetic disk drive. SOLUTION: In the magnetic reproducing head for reproducing the information recorded on a disk medium by the perpendicular magnetic recording method, a magneto-resistive element having a free layer 1, the resistance value of which is varied in response to a change of an external magnetization, and hard bias layers 9, 10 for making the free layer 1 to form a single magnetic domain are provided. When the product of a residual magnetization of the hard bias layers 9, 10 and the thickness is expressed as Mrt1, and an intensity of a medium magnetization of the disk medium is expressed as Mrt2, relation of (Mrt1/Mrt2)≥3.0 needs to be satisfied. Especially, when a linear recording density of the magnetic medium is expressed as Q, relation of (Mrt1/Mrt2)≥1.5×Q+1.9 needs to be satisfied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
