PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary kiln having excellent stirring performance, in which subject matter can be uniformly heated. SOLUTION: This rotary kiln comprises a shell rotating around an axial line, containing treating objects, and a heating furnace 7 to heat outside parts of the shell 13. The cross sectional form of a heat zone 13a of the shell 13 is oval. The longer diameter of oval form of the cross section of the shell 13 has a ratio of 1.1-2.5 to 1 of the shorter diameter.
