摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS type liquid crystal display device which has a simple constitution and also has improved display quality and viewing angle. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a first polarizing film, a first retardation region, a second retardation region, a liquid crystal cell, and a second polarizing film in this order disposed therein, with liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer being aligned in parallel to the surface of the pair of substrate in a black state, wherein an in-plane retardation (Re) of the first retardation region is from 70 nm to 330 nmn and a value of Nz=Rth/Re+0.5 in the first first retardation region using the in-plane retardation (Re=700 to 330 nm) and a retardation (Rth) of the first retardation region in the thickness direction is not less than 0 to less than 0.5; and in-plane retardation of the second retardation region is &le;50 nm and the retardation (Th) in the thickness direction is 10 to 140 nm. Further, a transmission axis of the first polarizing plate is orthogonal to a slow axis of the first retardation region and parallel to the alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules in the black state, and an optical axis of the second retardation region is not included in the plane of the second retardation region. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
