PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device capable of enhancing light emitting characteristics, and a liquid crystal display device having this light source.

SOLUTION: This surface light source device has a light source body which has a plurality of discharge spaces mutually formed side by side on the same plane, and in which the mutually adjacent discharge spaces are segregated by a first distance or longer, and first and second external electrodes formed on the outer surface of the light source and each formed at both end parts in the longitudinal direction of the discharge space so as to cross the discharge space.
