A child-resistant package (30) includes a plastic container (32) having a body (36), an externally threaded finish (38), and a shoulder (40) coupling the finish to the body and having an outer axially facing surface (46). A deflectable (44) release element is integrally cantilevered from an exterior surface of the finish adjacent to the outer axially facing surface of the container shoulder, and a locking lug (48) is provided on the release element (44). A plastic closure (34) has an internally threaded skirt (54) for receipt over the externally threaded finish (38) and a locking lug (62) on the skirt for engagement with the locking lug (48) on the release element (44) to prevent unthreading of the closure from the finish. Manual flexure of the release element (44) moves the locking lug (48) on the release element out of engagement with the locking lug (62) on the skirt to permit removal of the closure. The release element (44) on the container finish is positioned with respect to the container shoulder (40) such that abutment of the release element against the external surface (46) of the shoulder prevents over-flexing of the release element away from the closure.
