The locking system (1) is for a road vehicle safety belt (11). The safety belt takes a nearly 180 degree turn around a small roller (21,23) on a movable axis (19). The pelvis region of the belt (13) and the torso region of the belt (15) extend on either side of a padded base portion (3). A locking plate (5) is positioned the other side of the padded base portion. There is a gap (9) between the padded end (25) of the locking plate and the roller, through which the belt passes. A hard pull on the belt moves the roller to bear on the base portion and the locking plate moves to trap the belt against the roller.
