PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair cosmetic composition scarcely having unpleasant odor during application thereof and residual odor to hair after the application, excellent in waving effect or straight effect and scarcely damaging the hair. SOLUTION: A reducing agent for hair cosmetics comprises a compound represented by formula (I): HS-CH<SB>2</SB>-CO-CH<SB>2</SB>-OR<SP>1</SP>, wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group, a hydroxyalkyl group, a hydroxyalkoxy-alkyl group or C(O)R<SP>2</SP>(wherein R<SP>2</SP>is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or a hydroxyalkyl group), and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>may be the same or different. The hair cosmetic composition comprises at least one kind of the reducing agent for hair cosmetics.
