<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase production efficiency even where color images and monochrome images are mixed and to shorten the time needed for an image forming process. <P>SOLUTION: In an image formation mode in which color images and monochrome images are mixed, the image forming apparatus processes the image formation mode as a color mode used for forming only color images. In addition to that, in a developing step for the monochrome images, a developing step for the color images is performed. Then, first and second image forming units are retracted into retracted positions that are away from the respective developing positions.
