PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of reading an original whose area is equal to and more than the area of platen glass without the need for extending the area of the platen glass resulting in upsizing the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 2 provided with: the platen glass 21 fitted to an upper face of a reading original placing platen 20; and a platen cover 22 for openably covering the platen glass 21, includes an automatic original reader 25 whose long side directional length is nearly the same as the long side directional length of the platen glass 21 that is located at one side of the platen cover 22 in a short side direction, and the automatic original reader 25 is configured to capture the original in the short side direction of the platen cover 22.
