The method involves performing a lower-speed programming of a given cell type in an area of memory array. A result of the programming of the type is confirmed. A higher-speed programming of the cell type in another area of the array is performed after the confirmation of the result of the former programming. An initial programming voltage of the latter programming is different from that of the former programming. An independent claim is also included for a semiconductor memory device, comprising a non-volatile memory array and a controller.
