The method involves determining injection quantity for each combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The quantity for each combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine is compared with a minimum output. Number of discharge strokes of the fuel high-pressure pump relative to the number of injections is reduced, if the injection quantity is smaller than the minimum output. An independent claim is also included for a fuel injection system for a combustion engine.
