A tandem configuration apparatus (100) according to the invention generates a three­dimensional mass or ion mobility spectrum of parent and associated product ions from a single, stored population of heterogeneous ions. The apparatus (100) comprises a multipole ion storage and sorting element (1) for receiving ions from an ion source and providing a sorted ion stream on the basis of mass-to-charge ratio of the received ions, a collision cell (5) for receiving the sorted ion stream and fragmenting at least a portion of ions comprising the ion stream, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer or ion mobility spectrometer (10), the time-of-flight mass spectrometer or ion mobility spectrometer (10) receiving and identifying ions provided by the collision cell (5).
