The present invention relates to user-customized formulations that enable user notification of location and/or concentration of the formulation during surface application. In a preferred embodiment, an additive is provided for introduction to a product that is selected by the user. The additive enables temporary detection of the product during and/or after application of the product to a surface. The additive is preferably selected by the user to meet certain requirements, such as length of time in which the product would be detectable. After mixing the additive into a pre-selected product, the product is immediately applied to a surface. The product is detectable to the user and/or others during and/or after surface application for a specified period of time.
