[PROBLEMS] To provide a backlight unit having good display quality; and a liquid crystal display device provided with the same. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A light source (51), a reflection sheet (10), a light guide plate (20), a gas space (30), and a diffusion plate (40) are installed. The reflection sheet (10), light guide plate (20), gas space (30), and a diffusion plate (40) are superposed in the order mentioned. The light source (51) is in the form of individual light sources having different spectra or different amounts of luminescence and disposed in the vicinity of the incident surface (23) of the light guide plate (20). The surface of the light guide plate opposed to the reflecting sheet (10) is provided with scattering dots (22) whereby the light transmitted through the light guide plate (20) is taken out to the reflection plate (10) side.
