An industrial gear unit comprises a housing 14 having a coolant device 1 with a casing wall structure 2 which defines a chamber 3 through which coolant water is circulated via an inlet port 4, in an end plate, and exit via an outlet port. The casing 2 is shaped to have surfaces 5 and 6 which conform to and bear closely against confronting surface regions of the housing 14. Inner regions of the casing 2, internally of the parts of the casing 2 which confront the surfaces 5 and 6, are provided with rib structures 7 that assist in enhancing heat transfer so as to provide a capacity rating of at least 373 joules/per sec. The device 1 may be made of sheet metal and have a shape which is deformed, when attached by retention means (eg bolts), so as to conform to the surface of the housing 14. In another embodiment the device may be cast material and fixed to a sump of the gear unit by clamps. |
