The invention relates to a method for determining at least one oil characteristic of a geological sediment sample consisting in heating said sample in an oxidising atmosphere in such a way that the temperature thereof is gradually increased to the first and, afterwards the second value, wherein said first value lower than 200 DEG C is very rapidly attainable and is maintained substantially constant for a certain time and said second value ranging from 600 DEG C to 850 DEG C is attainable from the first value according to a temperature gradient ranging from 1 to 30 DEG C/min. The inventive method also consists in continuously measuring at each instant of the sample heating time the amount of SO2 contained in a flow resulting from said oxidising heating.
