Disclosed is a system for producing electrochemical energy wherein operating conditions can be regulated in accordance with the changes in the internal characteristics of an electrochemical device such as a fuel cell and a high energy density can be attained. Also disclosed is a method for driving such a system. Specifically disclosed is a system for producing electrochemical energy comprising an electrochemical device (2) such as a fuel cell for producing electrochemical energy, a measuring unit for determining the operating state of the electrochemical device (2), a regulating unit for adjusting the operating conditions of the electrochemical device (2), and a control unit (11) connected to the measuring unit and the regulating unit for controlling the operating conditions. During the operation of the electrochemical device (2), the control unit (11) controls the regulating unit basing on the values measured by the measuring unit, and the operating conditions of the electrochemical device (2) are regulated through the thus-controlled regulating unit.
