The method involves measuring an exhaust gas component, and comparing the measured exhaust gas component with an assigned threshold. Parameters are selected as control input parameters depending upon a momentary operating point of an internal combustion engine when the measured component exceeds the assigned threshold. A control unit (15) controls fuel mixture generation of the engine according to the requirement of the parameters. An independent claim is also included for an application of a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
