PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical power converter which is excellent in resistance to an overload, capable of power regeneration, and high in converter efficiency. SOLUTION: This power converter is equipped with a power diode rectifier REC which rectifies AC power, a voltage type self-excited power converter CNV whose AC terminal is connected via a reactor La to the AC terminal of the power diode rectifier REC, a DC smoothing capacitor Cd which is connected between the DC terminals of the self-excited power converter CNV, a means which controls an input current Is from an AC power source by operating the voltage type self-excited power converter in a fixed pulse pattern and adjusting the phase angleϕof the terminal voltage Vc on the AC side of the voltage type self-excited power converter to the voltage Vs of an AC power source SUP, and a means which detects the overcurrent of the DC current or AC current of the voltage self-excited power converter CNV and switches off all self-extinguishing elements.
