PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically perform a hardness measurement in a hardness tester. SOLUTION: In this hardness tester 100, an area determination means determines, based on surface image data of a sample S acquired by a CCD camera 11, whether or not a test area determined according to a set testing force can be ensured in a range divided as an adaptive range suitable for a hardness test by a dividing means. Position information for the test area determined to be ensured is stored in a RAM 5c.
