PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively and simply produce an optically active 4-halobutyric acid derivative in higher optical yield by using a 4-halocrotonic acid derivative as a raw material. SOLUTION: A microbial cell having an ability to stereoselectively reduce theα,β-carbon-carbon double bond of the 4-halocrotonic acid derivative represented by formula (I) (wherein, R denotes a halogen atom, nitro group, hydroxy group, an alkyl group which may be substituted, an aryl group which may be substituted or an alkoxy group which may be substituted; X denotes a halogen atom; and A<SB>1</SB>and A<SB>2</SB>denote each hydrogen atom or a halogen atom), a treated substance and/or a culture solution of the microbial cell are made to act on the 4-halocrotonic acid derivative. Thereby, the optically active 4-halobutyric acid derivative represented by formula (II) äwherein, R, X, A<SB>1</SB>and A<SB>2</SB>have the same meanings as in formula (I)} is produced.
