The system has a rack for moving wheels with a guidance for transferring a manual guidance moment to the rack and a hydraulic apparatus with a hydraulic medium for the production of a hydraulic pressure for the support of the manual guidance moment. A device is provided which reduces the hydraulic pressure, as soon as the manual guidance moment exceeds a given value. A rotary valve (7) is provided such that a hydraulic pressure is reduced when reaching a steering angle. An independent claim is included for a method for the operation of a hydraulic steering system.
