PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device performing high-grade OSD display which prevents its brightness from fluctuating even when dynamically modulating the light emission luminance of a back light source according to an input video signal. SOLUTION: The image display device comprises: a liquid crystal panel 3 for displaying an input video signal by using a back light source 9; an APL detector 6 for detecting the average luminance level of the input video signal; a control microcomputer 18 for dynamically and variably controlling the light emission luminance of the back light source 9; and an OSD section 11 for superposing (compositing) a prescribed on-screen display image signal on the input video signal. The control microcomputer 18 variously controls the luminance level of the on-screen display image signal according to the light emission luminance of the back light source 9.
