The apparatus has a main plate and a track carrier plate which together form a coin channel. The apparatus also has a coin slowing element between the coin slot and the track of the track carrier plate and is moveably mounted on one of the plates. The coin slowing element has at least one wedge surface which guides a coin, during its passage, towards the opposite wall of the channel. The coin slowing element (22) is in the form of a plate and the wedge or tapered surface is provided after the coin slot. The tapered surface continues into a guide surface which extends parallel to the wall of the channel. The coin slowing element floats in a guide groove in a receptacle opening of the track carrier plate, but has limited movement parallel to the coin channel. The coin slowing element is biased by a spring arrangement. The distance between the guide surface and the opposite wall is smaller than the thickness of the smallest coin when the slowing element lies against a stop.
