There is provided an information recording device capable of performing high-speed physical reformatting while eliminating unnecessary alternation after the physical reformatting. A disc recording/reproduction drive (1020) records information on an information recording medium having a volume space where user data is recorded, a spare area containing an alternation area used instead of a defective area, and a defect management information area where defect management information is recorded. The defect management information includes defect position information indicating the position of the defect area and defect state information indicating the state of the defect area. The information recording device has an initialization unit (1072) for maintaining at least the defect position information among the defect management information and rewriting the defect state information into an attribute indicating that physical reformatting has been performed for the defective area when physically reformatting the information recording medium.
