PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-step index type plastic optical fiber which has satisfactory productivity and excellent transmission performance, and broadens the bandwidth particularly corresponding to GI-POF (graded-index plastic optical fiber). SOLUTION: The multi-step index type plastic optical fiber has a core part composed of three or more layers concentrically arranged and a clad part formed on the outer periphery. Therein, each of the three or more layers is made of non-crystalline polymer composition which has not substantially C-H bonds and the three or more layers are arranged such that the refractive index of the core part become smaller toward the outer periphery from the center. In the multi-step index type plastic optical fiber, it is preferable that every difference of refractive indexes between adjacent layers in the core part is substantially the same and the refractive index of the core part approximates the G-power distribution.
