[Class 56] [Also in Group XXXIV] Jewel-bearing material is heated to a plastic state and rammed against a moulding die carrying a bushing in which the jewel is to be set, the impact of the ramming stroke being cushioned. As shown, a cane 35 of jewel material, e.g., as described in Specification 618,239, is gripped by a leaf spring 36 and fed and retracted by movement within a housing 29 of a spring- loaded arbor 30 guided by a rod 32. The cane is heated at its lower end by flames from nozzles 57 which also heat a bushing placed in a recess 44 (Fig. 2) in a sleeve 43 surrounding the die 45; advancement of a ram 22 presses the plastic material into the bushing and against the die while a knife 24 severs it from the rest of the cane 35; after retraction of the ram, the die 45 is moved to expel the jewel in its bushing by a lever 66 acting on its rear shank 49, and the jewel is then finished by grinding, firing, &c. as described in Specification 596,815. A cushioning spring 51 is located between a shoulder 48 on the die 45 and a sleeve 50 within which the die is movable to an extent limited by pin 54 and slot 55; any further movement during pressing is taken up by a spring 52 which also serves to retain the face of the sleeve 50 flush with the face of the sleeve 39; the lever 66 normally engages a flange on the far end of the shank 49 to bring the die into the position shown in Fig. 2. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that for producing unset bearings, the sleeve 43 may be formed without the recess 44, while mounted endstone jewels (see Group XXXIV) may be formed by replacing the die 45 by a bushing shaped to receive the endstone rod; the rod is inserted through a diagonal slot in the block 39 and the bushing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
