In a rotary document copying apparatus for reproducing an " original " carried by a glasswalled cylinder 1 on unprepared copy sheets 17 the " original " is wrapped around the cylinder with its indicia bearing surface contacting the glass. Stationary infra-red heater tubes 2 located within the cylinder are used to radiate heat outwardly through the glass wall causing the dyestuff carried by an endless belt 12, which is pressed against the rear surface of the " original " by a soft rubber roller 11, to melt and adhere to the rear surface of the original in those places corresponding to indicia on the other side. The transferred dyestuff is cooled by air jets at a position between the two heater tubes 2. The endless belt 12 then passes through a regenerating plant in which it is recoated with dyestuff from a bath 31. Meanwhile the " original " bearing the transferred dyestuff is contacted by a sheet 17 of copy material a rubber coated spring-loaded roller 18 pressing the sheet and the " original " together to ensure the transfer of the dyestuff from the rear surface of the " original " on to the copy material. Plates 47 are provided to strip the image bearing copy sheet from the " original," the sheet being carried to a receiving tray 40 by endless belts 41. Shields are provided within the cylinder such that the heater tubes may be switched " on " before the " original " is in a position to pass beneath the roller 11 and to enable selective " line " copying to be carried out. In certain copying procedures only the heater tube opposite the roller 11 is provided. In such a case the cooling air jets are dispensed with.
