The invention relates to motor vehicle transmission, specifically to an anti-theft device for motor vehicles. A locking member is provided to keep the output shaft in a locked position; the said locking member can be switched by mechanical, electrical or electromagnetic means to a release position. According to the invention, the locking member is held in the locking position by an electromagnetically operated ratchet. The ratchet (28, 68) and an associated electronic control system which slides the ratchet back when the correct code is entered are meant to be arranged in the transmission housing itself, if possible in an inaccessible location.
