Water is removed from continuous strands (10) by imparting a vibration over a trough (12) from which water is carried away by a suction arrangement (18). The vibration is mainly in a horizontal plane at a preferred frequency of four times the quotient of speed and trough length. Water removal can be assisted by air jets supplied through a blowing manifold (34). The trough (12) is supported on floating bearings and vibrated by an out-of-balance motor (36). A fan (20) combines the removal of water with the supply of blowing air through a closed circuit with a water separator (24).
