Tool (1) of surface-coated cubic boron nitride sintered compact comprising base material (2) constituted of a cubic boron nitride (CBN) sintered compact and, covering a surface of the base material (2), surface coating film (3), wherein there are provided negative land (4) having the CBN sintered compact exposed at at least part thereof and flank (5) having the surface coating film (3). Thus, tool (1) of surface-coated CBN sintered compact simultaneously realizing excellent fracture resistance and abrasion resistance becomes available. It is preferred that the surface coating film (3) contain a nitride or carbonitride of a compound composed of at least one member selected from the group consisting of Ti, Cr, Zr and V and at least one member selected from the group consisting of Al, Si and B, or contain a nitride or carbonitride of Ti.
