PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus for forming a high quality image at high speed by preventing an image from deteriorating due to oscillation delay of a laser diode while suppressing deterioration of a photoreceptor. SOLUTION: A laser printer 1 comprises a bias modulation system LD modulation circuit 40 for driving an LD 10 to emit a light beam, and a scanning/image forming optical system for setting the emission quantity of the LD 10 and the total light utilization efficiency of the scanning/image forming optical system based on the differentiation efficiency of the LD 10, the threshold current, the lifetime of carrier in a laser medium, and the scanning time per pixel such that the oscillation delay amount of the LD 10 becomes one half of the scanning time per pixel or less when an image is formed on the photoreceptor by the light beam. When the LD 10 is driven at a drive frequency of MHz order or more, offset emission is reduced by suppressing the bias current of the LD 10, and operating speed of the LD 10 is enhanced by suppressing oscillation delay while prolonging the lifetime of the photoreceptor thus enhancing the image quality.
