PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing 3-hydroxythiolane used in synthesizing various kinds of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, biologically active substances, etc., and comprising a useful intermediate for synthesizing them. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 3-hydroxythiolane expressed by general formula (2) comprises reacting a compound expressed by general formula (1) (X is a halogen; and R<SP>2</SP>is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl) with a metal sulfide.
