PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simply structured illuminator capable of adjusting at high speed the light quantity of illumination light to a microscope. SOLUTION: The microscope 100 includes an illuminator for lighting a specimen 111. The illuminator includes an objective lens 112 used commonly with a viewing optical system, a light source 123 for generating illumination light (excitation light), a collective lens 122, a reflection mirror 121, an illumination section 120 for lighting the specimen 111 with the illumination light from the light source 123, a field stop projection lens 119, an excitation filter 118, and a dichroic mirror 113. The illuminator is further equipped with a detector for detecting light quantity and a controller 127 for controlling the illumination section 120 based on the light quantity detected by the detector. The light quantity detector is provided with a system for detecting the light quantity of the illumination light radiating from the illumination section to the specimen 111.
