PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic image pickup unit capable of improving operability, performing speedy operation and preventing useless power consumption. SOLUTION: An electronic image pickup unit comprises: a power switch for switching ON/OFF of a power source of the electronic image pickup unit; an image pickup means 11 for converting a formed object image into video information; recording means 13, 14, 16; for recording the video information; reproducing means 16, 22, 23, 24 for reproducing the recorded video information; a protection cover 10 capable of taking a state of covering a photographing lens and a state of exposing the photographing lens; a switch means 31 for switching a recording mode and a reproducing mode if the protection cover is in the state of exposing the photographing lens; and a control means 21 capable of performing control not to supply power to at least partial circuits of a photographing system if the power source is turned on by the power switch while covering the photographing lens with the protection cover, and switching the recording mode and the reproducing mode based on operation of the switch means if the protection cover is positioned to expose the photographing lens.
