PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent racing (meaning that an engine speed of an engine suddenly increases more than necessary after a direct start) after the direct start for restarting the engine only by combustion of a cylinder. SOLUTION: After starting the direct start, the determination is made on whether or not a restart of the engine succeeds. Afterwards, when the restart succeeds, a racing preventive measure is taken until intake pressure becomes intake pressure or less in idling. As the racing preventive measure, a cylinder existing in a compression stroke is burnt in lean or a throttle valve is closed more than throttle opening in the idling. In a desirable mode, even when the intake pressure is low, when a catalyst is a relatively low temperature state lower than an active state, the cylinder existing in the compression stroke is burnt in rich. Here, in that case, torque is restrained by retarding ignition. Thus, since a temperature state of the catalyst is improved, an exhaust gas counter measure can be taken while preventing the racing.
