The device has a transmitter emitting optical and/or electrical dynamic signals, and an optoreceiver. Supply current and voltage measuring units (71, 72) record supply-current and voltage consumption of the transmitter and the receiver, respectively. A processing unit (73) produces a diagnosing signal indicating the condition of a safety connection block in response to the dynamic signals and recorded supply current and voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing an optoelectronic safety system.
