PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable shortening a time required for deciding the optimum receiving direction and reducing the number of scans, without performing wasteful scannings in directions which cannot be actually discriminated, when a multi-directional antenna (smart antenna) 2 having directions for four directions or eight directions is connected to a digital TV broadcast signal receiving device 1. SOLUTION: When the multi-directional antenna 2 is coupled, a tuner 11 sequentially receives TV broadcast signals for each or receiving directions of 16 directions, a control unit 16 measures the signal receiving strength in each direction, and the strength is stored in a memory 17. Then, the control unit 16 compares signal receiving strengths for two or four adjacent directions out of 16 directions. If the signal receiving strengths of the two or four adjacent receiving directions are the almost the same, the control unit 16 determines that the receiving directions of the connected antenna 2 are eight or four, and performs four or eight-direction control for a control unit 21.
