PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability of various kinds of motion picture data operations using a representative image by having information related to the selection of the representative image as an attribute of that representative image. SOLUTION: An apparatus that manages a moving image recorded on a storage medium in association with one or more representative images stores the representative image in accordance with the moving image, accesses a storage section storing selection reference information of the representative image in accordance with the representative image and selects a representative image corresponding to a purpose of processing out of representative images stored in accordance with a desired moving image based on the selection reference information. If one of selected representative images is designated, processing corresponding to the purpose of processing is applied to a moving image of a section indicated by section information corresponding to the designated representative image.
