PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to mold an optical element with high precision by preventing the intrusion of a glass material between the ridgeline part of a circumference-regulating member used for the press forming of the glass material and the molding surfaces of molding dies. SOLUTION: A glass material 4 softened by heating is subjected to press molding using a pair of molding dies 1 and 2 to form a desired optical element. The molding method includes a coating step for coating a liquid containing carbon particles on a surface of the glass material 4 other than the optical functional surface thereof, a pressing step for pressing the glass material 4 with the liquid coated thereon by moving the pair of molding dies 1 and 2 in the direction that they approach to each other, and a contact process for flowing the glass material 4 in the direction approximately perpendicular to the moving direction of the molding dies 1 and 2 by continuing the pressing process to bring the glass material 4 into contact with the circumference-regulating member 3 arranged at the outside thereof.
