The method involves directly or indirectly regulating a number of revolutions of a brushless fan motor by a governor. The governor monitors and determines whether the motor attains a target number of revolutions despite the longer period of regulation. An output signal of the governor can be evaluated if the output signal reaches a preset threshold that is longer than the period of regulation. An independent claim is also included for a motor control unit with overload protection for operation of a brushless fan motor.
