The device has an input part for receiving an external state variable, and switching units (34, 36) with inputs (38) and outputs (42). Microcontrollers (30, 32) are adapted to control the switching units depending on the external state variable such that a signal applied to one of the inputs is switched to one of the outputs. The inputs of the switching units are subjected to a permanent high potential. An independent claim is also included for a safety circuit for safe switching of a system.
