PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method, which record data in the form of pre-pit strings associated with an HFM groove on a lead-in area of a high-density read-only optical disk such as a BD-ROM, and which continuously apply the same tracking servo operation to the overall area of the high-density read-only optical disk or a high-density rewritable optical disk. SOLUTION: The device for reproducing the data from the recording medium is provided with: a pickup for reproducing the data recorded on the recording medium including a first area having the pre-pits formed in a wobble shape and a second area having the linear pre-pits; and a servo controller for controlling the tracking operation of the pickup in the first area and the second area, using one of a PP signal generated as the difference between the signals detected from a photodetector of the pickup and DPD signals generated as the phase difference between the signals detected from the photodetector of the pickup.
