PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent picture quality by always maintaining linearity of a display image, regardless ambient light, by detecting the ambient light and adjusting a luminance weight of each sub-field when sub-field image display is performed. SOLUTION: When one field of an input image signal (I) is divided into a plurality of sub-fields and gradations are represented by controlling light emission of a display means with combinations of light emission by the sub-fields, an output value (Q) is outputted by determining luminance weights by the sub-fields so that the value obtained by subjecting the total value (P+Q) of an ambient light gradation value (P) obtained by converting ambient lightness to display gradations and an output value (Q) from an image display device is a primary function of the input image signal (I).
