PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle traffic investigation system which can automatically identify vehicle types from vehicle numberplates at high accuracy. SOLUTION: The vehicle traffic investigation system calculates a vehicle width from a vehicle image for every vehicle to be investigated, and determines a vehicle classification number, which is acquired from an image of a classification number that indicates type and usage for vehicles based on a numberplate image acquired from the vicinity of the center of the vehicle width by pattern comparison using font data corresponding to figures 0 to 9. In addition, the system acquires a vehicle type code, which is determined from the vehicle classification number and a numberplate size corresponding to the vehicle width with reference to the large, middle and small numberplate sizes specified by the Road Transportation Vehicle Low.
