PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner superior in heating performance with small power consumption. SOLUTION: This air conditioner comprises a heat exchanger 11 composed of a plurality of heat transfer tubes 14 and a number of fins 11a, a heat exchanging air blower 12, a drain pan 13 for storing the condensate generated in the heat exchanger 11, and a branch unit 15 for branching the refrigerant to the other heat transfer tubes 14 after allowing the refrigerant to pass through the heat transfer tubes 14 mounted at a lowermost stage of the heat exchanger 11 in cooling operation. The refrigerant is not excessively stored in the heat exchanger 11 in a case when the heat exchanger 11 is used as an evaporator, or in a case when the heat exchanger 11 is used as a condenser as it is unnecessary to increase the flow channel resistance of the heat transfer tubes 14 of the lowermost stage of the heat exchanger 11 or a balance pipe 15 communicating the branch unit 15 and the other heat transfer tubes 14, thus the heating performance can be improved and the power consumption can be reduced.
