PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an adamantanol industrially useful as a medicine or a monomer for photoresist by a simple process to mildly oxidizing adamantanes with a nitrous acid salt or a nitric acid salt without producing adamantanediols. SOLUTION: The method for the production of adamantanols comprises the oxidation of adamantanes with a nitrous acid salt or a nitric acid salt in the presence of a strong acid having an acid dissociation constant (pKa) of≤1 in an aqueous solution, preferably trifluoroacetic acid, methanesulfonic acid, etc., and the hydrolysis of the produced acid ester of adamantanols.
