PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a building material formed by synthesizing an apatite compound represented by hydroxyapatite on the surface or a surface layer part of a formed body comprising calcium silicate well-known as a building material to firmly stick the apatite compound on the surface or the surface layer part and a method of manufacturing the building material. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the building material is carried out by applying a water soluble phosphate compound aqueous solution on the surface of a raw material formed body obtained by forming or the like a mixture containing a silica raw material, a calcareous raw material, cement and water into a prescribed shape or on the surface of a calcium silicate hardened body, carrying out hydrothermal reaction to synthesize the apatite compound on the surface or the surface layer part of the calcium silicate hardened body. The resultant building material is constituted so that the intertwinement of the particles of calcium silicate, the apatite compound and silica is formed and the apatite compound is firmly stuck on the surface or the surface layer part.
