PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of lighting discharge lamps of a plurality of rated powers, automatically discriminating the rated powers of the discharge lamps, and moreover lighting the discharge lamps at the rated powers thereof, wherein the load discrimination is made surely possible at any of the first start and the restart of the lamps. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises a power conversion circuit to convert a power from a direct current source and to supply the power to the high pressure discharge lamp, and a lighting control circuit to control the supply power of the power conversion circuit. The discharge lamp lighting device targets plural kinds of high-pressure discharge lamps, discriminates the kinds of the high-pressure discharge lamps, and is provided with a rated lighting means to light the high-pressure discharge lamps at ratings. It has at least a means of detecting electric quantities at the starting process of the discharge lamp, and discriminates the load in a region below a characteristics inflection point in the rising characteristic of electric quantities at the starting process of the discharge lamp.
